William Hobson - the most popular name used in New Zealand. The chap on the right is Sir Bernard Fergussen - who joined his father and grandfather as Governor of New Zealand.
Those that retained their Maoris customs and practices tended to be buried secretly by close relatives - for fear that their enemies would come a 'steal the bones' of those who did a earlier dis-service to and opposing Maoris tribe.
The chiefs that interested the author are Hongi Hika, Hone Heke, Tamati Waka Nene, Eruera Maihi Patuone, Te Ruki Kawiti and several decendents and lesser known Maori warriors and war-lords.
The author, John Cox, is a well known dog-trainer in South Africa, who, together with his wife, Sandie, has trained several tracking and guard dogs.
John has served in the British South Africa Police in Rhodesia as well as in the Air Force of Zimbabwe. Both Services made extensive use of Police trained guard dogs.
John has also trained sheep herding dogs and has participated in several national and international dog shows.
This book is thus a glimpse into the life and times of a dog trainer. His humerous stories will delight all pet-lovers who have enjoyed the love and friendship that their pets have enriched their owners lives.
